Selling?
- Add your vehicle. Enter the make, model and year.
- Add the figures. Berths, length, layout, and the MTPLM and MIRO from the weight plate. For a motorhome or campervan, the mileage and whether the MOT is current. Leave out anything you don't know: the advert shows only what you give.
- Add photos. Include the plate and the damp report if you have them.
- Mark it sold when it's gone.
What the terms in an advert mean
- Berths
- How many people it sleeps. A motorhome or campervan can have fewer seats with seatbelts than it has berths, so ask about both.
- MTPLM
- The most a caravan may weigh fully loaded, from the weight plate by the door. It is the figure to check against your car's towing limit.
- MIRO
- What it weighs empty. The difference between MIRO and MTPLM is the payload: what you can carry in it.
- Habitation check
- A service of the living area: gas, electrics, water and a damp test. It isn't a legal requirement, but many insurers and manufacturers ask for one every year.
- Damp report
- Moisture readings taken around the body, usually at the habitation check. Ask for the latest one and when it was done.
- V5C
- The logbook for a motorhome or campervan. The name and address on it should be the seller's. Touring caravans don't have one.
- CRiS
- The register of touring caravans. A CRiS check costs £17.95 and shows whether a caravan has been reported stolen, has finance owing or has been written off.
Before you buy
- Filter on berths, length, year, price, make, distance from your postcode, roof, off-grid kit and whether it was imported. Motorhomes and campervans also filter on travel seats, mileage, fuel, gearbox, left-hand drive and ex-hire, and caravans on axles and MTPLM. On motorhomes you can filter on the licence category needed to drive one. An advert that doesn't give its MTPLM drops out when you filter on it.
- Can my car tow it? On a caravan advert that gives its MTPLM, type your car's braked towing limit and kerb weight from the owner's manual, and the page compares them with the caravan's MTPLM. The legal limit is your car's braked towing limit. The 85% figure is guidance for someone new to towing, not law.
- Licence: if you passed your car test on or after 1 January 1997, you can tow a trailer up to 3,500 kg MAM (gov.uk). Every touring caravan on sale is under that.
- Before you pay: see it in person, check the V5C (motorhomes) or ownership papers (caravans), and get a CRiS check for a caravan (£17.95 from CRiS; we don't run it and can't).
