How old is my caravan?

The 17-character VIN is stamped on the chassis near the hitch and is often etched on the windows. Touring caravans built since 1992 are normally registered with CRiS and carry this number.

A caravan from 1987 to 1991 has an NCC mark: two digits for the year, two letters for the maker, then more digits. You can enter that here too.

A VIN never contains the letters I, O or Q. An I or an O in what you have read is usually a 1 or a 0.

The first three characters of the VIN are the maker's code. On the makes this page covers, the tenth character is the model year. We checked that position against caravans whose year was stated separately before trusting it, which is why other makers get no year here.

The year codes run in a fixed order: the letters from A, leaving out I, O, Q, U and Z, then the digits 1 to 9. That makes 30 codes, so each one comes round again after 30 years. N was 1992 and is 2022 as well. When a code has two possible years this page gives both.

A caravan built from September can carry the following year's code, so the model year can be one later than the year it was built.

The number gives the maker and the model year, nothing else. It does not show whether a caravan has been reported stolen, has finance owing or has been written off. A CRiS check covers those, and we don't run it.
